SharePoint Integration

SharePoint is a web portal solution from Microsoft that can be used as the basis for building a company wide intranet. Out of the box SharePoint provides some basic functionality, and with further development work it is a very extensible platform for building a wide variety of web based business applications. OpenAsset can be integrated with SharePoint using:

  • Out of the box features

Features built in to OpenAsset and SharePoint. e.g. Display of OpenAsset within SharePoint using the SharePoint Page Viewer Web Part.

  • Web Parts available for purchase

e.g. A Web Part that displays the latest images uploaded to OpenAsset on the SharePoint front page.

  • Custom development

Bespoke features can be built using the open APIs provided by both OpenAsset and SharePoint. e.g. Pushing key project data from a projects database into OpenAsset

Out of the box OpenAsset contains many tools for integrating into your SharePoint intranet. Developers can also use APIs provided by both OpenAsset and SharePoint to achieve further bespoke integration.

Our APIs for pushing data into OpenAsset are accessed using SOAP Web Services, a standard pioneered by Microsoft. There are also URL APIs that enable you to link to content directly in OpenAsset from other web pages of a SharePoint portal, and RSS feeds for displaying selections of images on SharePoint pages.

The following table outlines what can be achieved integrating OpenAsset into your SharePoint intranet:

Active Directory OpenAsset can create new user accounts and authenticate passwords by talking to Active Directory.

This would be the same system that manages user accounts for SharePoint and therefore provides a single point of administration of user accounts.

Out of the box feature

Single Sign-on Microsoft's NTLM protocol enables a user to log into OpenAsset automatically without the need to enter their username and password.

Therefore when OpenAsset is displayed within SharePoint there are no confusing extra login boxes.

Out of the box feature

Display of OpenAsset within SharePoint OpenAsset can be displayed using the SharePoint Page Viewer Web Part. Optionally the page displayed can be finely controlled using the URL / Link APIs.

For example if a user is viewing a particular project in SharePoint, OpenAsset can be set to display a summary page of images from that project all within the same web browser window.

There are a variety of pages in OpenAsset which can be displayed and controlled using the current status of a SharePoint session.

Custom development work for sophisticated bespoke requirements.

Web Parts OpenAsset produces RSS feeds of images and associated data.

For example, these can be used to display the best images from a project in a SharePoint Web Part on the front page of your Intranet.

Web Parts are available for purchase. Please contact Axomic for more information.

Custom development. Sample code can be provided free by Axomic.

Projects code / name API New project information can be pushed into OpenAsset from other systems, therefore requiring only a single entry point for project data entry.

For example, when a new project is added into a SharePoint system with a database back end this information can by synchronised with OpenAsset.

Custom development work required. Sample code can be provided free by Axomic.
